How Many Cigarettes Are In A Vape?
There is no reliable number of cigarettes in a vape. The puff count printed on a pack is only the maker’s estimate, and it does not show how much nicotine your body takes in. To understand a vape, look at four separate things: the advertised puff count, the e-liquid nicotine strength (mg/ml), the total nicotine contained in the liquid (mg) and the nicotine actually absorbed, which varies from person to person.
Many adult smokers ask how many cigarettes are in a vape when they think about switching. This guide explains what the numbers on a vape or pod label mean, and why they cannot be turned into a cigarette count.
Nicotine Content and Strength Explained
In the UK, a nicotine vape tank or prefilled pod can hold no more than 2ml of e-liquid, and nicotine e-liquid can be no stronger than 20mg/ml (GOV.UK e-cigarette rules). Vapes come in different e-liquid nicotine strengths (mg/ml), such as 6mg/ml, 10mg/ml and 20mg/ml.
The strength in mg/ml tells you how many milligrams of nicotine are in each millilitre of e-liquid. The volume in ml tells you how much liquid the pod or tank holds. Multiplying the two gives the total nicotine contained in the liquid:
- 20 mg/ml × 2 ml = 40 mg of nicotine contained in the liquid, not nicotine absorbed by the user.
This is a simple example of what is in the liquid. It does not tell you how much nicotine reaches your bloodstream. That depends on the device, how long and how deeply you inhale, how often you vape and your own body. So the result has no reliable cigarette equivalent, and it says nothing about health risk. Can 600, 6000 or 10000 Puffs Be Compared With Cigarettes?
Puff counts such as 600, 6000, 10000 or even 25000 puffs are estimates made under the maker’s own test conditions. Real puffs vary in length and strength from one person to the next, so the same device can give very different results. A bigger puff number does not mean more nicotine in each puff, and the nicotine you absorb from a puff is not the same as from a cigarette. That is why there is no fixed vape-to-cigarette ratio, and questions like “6000 puffs equals how many cigarettes?” or “how many puffs of a 20mg vape is equal to a cigarette?” have no reliable answer.
A common example is the old 600-puff disposable vape. These held 2ml of e-liquid, so at the UK maximum of 20mg/ml the liquid contained up to 40mg of nicotine. That is the nicotine in the liquid, not what a person absorbs, so it still cannot be turned into a number of cigarettes or packs of cigarettes.
To compare products, read these four things on the label instead:
- Puff rating: the maker’s estimate of puffs, not a measure of nicotine.
- Nicotine strength (mg/ml): how concentrated the e-liquid is.
- Pod or tank volume (ml): how much liquid each pod or tank holds (up to 2ml in the UK).
- Total liquid supplied (ml): the pod volume times the number of pods, or the size of the refill bottle (up to 10ml for a nicotine refill bottle in the UK).
